What is a Mammogram?
A mammogram is an X-ray examination of the breast used to detect and diagnose breast diseases, particularly breast cancer, in its early stages. The procedure involves compressing the breast between two plates to obtain clear images from different angles.
Why should I get tested?
The primary purpose of a mammogram is early detection of breast cancer, which can significantly improve treatment outcomes and survival rates. It can identify tumors that are too small to be felt and detect other abnormalities that might indicate breast cancer.
When and how to get tested?
Age 40 to 74
The OBSP is now offering regular mammograms every 2 years for women, trans and non-binary people in this age group who are at average risk. You don’t need a doctor or nurse practitioner's referral, and the service is covered by OHIP.
People ages 40 to 74 are eligible for screening through the OBSP if they:
- have no new breast cancer symptoms
- have no personal history of breast cancer
- have not had a mastectomy
- have not had a screening mammogram within the last 11 months
If transfeminine, have used feminizing hormones for at least 5 years in a row.
Age 74+
Speak with your doctor or nurse practitioner about getting tested for breast cancer If you choose to get tested, you will need a referral for a mammogram from your doctor or nurse practitioner. This service is covered by OHIP with a referral.
Recommendations for High-Risk Individuals aged 30-69
The Ontario Breast Screening Program (OBSP) advises those aged 30 to 69 who are confirmed to be at high risk to undergo an annual mammogram along with either an MRI or an ultrasound. If you believe you have a family or medical history of breast cancer or other factors that may put you at high risk, consult your doctor or nurse practitioner.
Diagnostic Mammography
Diagnostic Mammography - is done when there is a concern and takes a more detailed look at the breast. Referral is required from your physician or nurse practitioner.

On the day of your Mammogram
- Wear a two-piece outfit (such as a top and pants) since you will need to remove your top.
- Avoid using deodorants, antiperspirants, body lotions, or talcum powders, as they can interfere with the accuracy of the mammogram.
- The entire process typically takes about 15-20 minutes.
- Do not be alarmed if additional views or ultrasound is necessary at the time of your visit or by callback.
